Is it okay to put ripped up cotton in my finches cage?

i have two finches and i leave them outside because my mom is very neat and tidy so yeah..and i found these nest builders for warmth at a pet store..and it was just this kind of gr and cottony stuff..and i was wondering if i can tear cotton apart and put it in my birds cage instead of buying it at the store..just want to make sure!
