How was voyager 1 and 2 powered? and...?

it seems it has gone far beyond our reach..can't we develop an spaceship powered by radioactive elements such as uranium so that it can produce enough power to keep spaceship going for many years. If so we could get data from beyond our solar system. Can this be employed?
