Can you tell me about the feast of fools in the middle ages?

i read in a book that in the middle ages the towns voted on a town fool, or jester, and the all gathered around and laughed at him while they made him eat some sort of meat or something... Is this true. I can't seem to find anything abut it on the internet. Thanks
